Actress Linda Robson Criticizes the Shut Down of the Islington Mecca Bingo Hall

On February 28, 2007, celebrity actress, Linda Robson criticized the shut down of the only bingo hall in Islington. Top officials of the Mecca Bingo Club at the Essex Road in Islington already announced that the last day of business at the bingo hall will be March 25, 2007.

48 year-old Linda from Islington said that it is a sad fact that an era will be coming to an end. She used to go to the bingo club with her mother, Rita. Rita commented that she is disgusted by the closing and that the Mecca Bosses have not even thought of the people that will be affected by it.

Bingo patrons of the hall even held a protest against the shut down. According to the owner of the Bingo Hall chain, Rank, they have decided to close the bingo hall because of the smoking ban set to be enforced in England and Wales on July 1, 2007. The smoking ban will cause them to lose a lot of profits, just like what happened in their bingo halls in Scotland when the ban was enforced there last year.

Players have already petitioned the Mecca bosses to give the bingo hall a chance. 64 year-old Dolores Murray said that the bingo hall is not just a place to play bingo - it has become an extension of her own family.
