Abilene City Council of Approves Smoking Ban

The Abilene City Council unanimously gave their nod to a citywide smoking ban on Thursday, December 21, 2006, following a three hour meeting regarding the matter. The approved ban prohibiting people from smoking in bars, restaurants, bingo halls, city parks, the county jail and any outdoor public events like concerts, reunions, etc., will be enforced on January 3, 2007.

Nevertheless, smoking will still be allowed in private clubs, operated by charitable organizations that are manned by volunteers, as well as some hotel rooms around the city. Around 30 people, most of them against the smoking ban, spoke to the council during that three hour meeting, airing their apprehensions and fears about the smoking ban and its possible effects on businesses, charities and individual lives in the community once it becomes legal on January 3rd.
